Finished some foot units for my Midgard project

 I've been working on this Warhammer Empire project, using Wargames Atlantic conquisadors for ages but I keep losing enthusiasm for it. Anyway, I've finally finished 32 figures as four units of foot troops. Scroll down to see them all.

Above are eight double-handed swordsmen, known as Greatswords in Warhammer Fantasy. Next is a unit of Halberdiers.

Below are two groups of Sword and Buckler men, playing the role of Empire Swordsmen.

Although my original plan was an army representing Averland in yellow and black, I decided to add some extra colour to some of the troops, basically because I was bored with just yellow and black. Black, yellow and red still works for Averland, but the red and blue colour scheme gives me the opportunity to add troops from elsewhere in the Warhammer Empire, in this case from Altdorf. The predominantly red and yellow uniforms could represent Talabecland, or maybe are just a variant of Averland's yellow and black but with a more dominant red component representing the colours of a local lord. It doesn't really matter too much. I've got some blue, yellow and white figures on the go as well. Maybe from Nordland or perhaps Tilean mercenaries?

Overall, it gives me a nice colourful army.

I've also got to work on my cavalry next. These will also be Wargames Atlantic and will be a mixture of armoured types with lances or pistols and lighter horse with lances and swords.

Two more figures from Bad Squiddo

I forgot to post these earlier, so here they are. Scroll down to see both of them.

This is Jeanne d'Arc. She comes in two versions, mounted and on foot. I only have the latter. Both versions come with a nice paper banner and a metal spear to put the banner on. 

Actually, you get two flags, in case you mess up the first! The flag artwork is Martin Whitmore.

The second figure is a fantasy one.

She is a spellcaster, described as an Arcane Witch on the website. As you can see, she is hovering above the ground, buoyed up by her magical powers.

Tieflings

 Yes, Tieflings. Six of them in total. Scroll down to see them all. These ones are from Bad Squiddo.

I decided that a bold colour palette was the way to go for these lovely figures. Above we have a Fighter of some sort, possibly even a Paladin and a spellcaster with a grimoire under her arm and a mystical McGuffin in her hand, maybe a Warlock or Wizard.

Next are two more Fighters. I decided to tie all the more martial Tieflings together with the colour of their clothes, making them kind of swaggering and dandified swashbucklers. The one on the right has some kind of small pet creature on her wrist.

The last two seem to be rather useful additions to any band of dungeon adventurers; another spellcaster and a rogue. I will say that these two are my favourites of the six. I could see the spellcaster working as a Druid, Sorcerer or a Wizard and the Rogue speaks for herself. I mean, everyone likes a sneaky thief with assassin-type skills, surely?

The backdrops are, as usual from Jon Hodgson's terrific books available from Bad Squiddo or Handiwork Games.

Pyrates!

 Two 28mm female ones, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, from Bad Squiddo;

The treasure chests are resin ones I've had for years, also from Bad Squiddo and are a great match for these two famous female pirates, Anne Bonny on the left and Mary Read on the right.

I've had these on the painting table for ages, half-finished but languishing becalmed in the Doldrums, but now I've finally finished them off.

You will note that I have given them rather dark skin, this is a deliberate attempt to make them look sunburnt and hardened by salty waves and high winds (in Jamaica). 

The backdrop is a Jon Hodgson one. 

I am reasonably pleased with how they look, but blown up to the original size of the photo, I can see all soerts of things I could have done better. Still, on the table, I'm sure that they'll look fine. I just need some more pirates to accompany them on their adventures on the Spanish Main.

Some more fantasy adventurers

 These have all been made from the North Star Frostgrave Soldiers II box;

Above are three figures who could be a Fighter, A Wizard and a Ranger, although I did gave a D&D Sorcerer in mind when I assembled the figure with the spear and lantern.

Below are a Rogue/Thief, a Cleric or maybe another Fighter  and a Fighter or Barbarian.

Of course, these could be used for all manner of different rulesets, so they are quite versatile as to their roles. They could even fit into a Frostgrave warband quite happily.

The backdrop is a, by now standard John Hodgson one.

I am reasonably happy with these, but I think that the Cleric is possibly the one I like least. I'm not sure if I'll keep them. I might put them up for sale at the club's annual Tabletop Sale in May.

More Gothic Horror......

 ... from Bad Squiddo. First up, The Count and Countess (with her little dog);

Two respected (OK, feared) members of the local community, The Count and Countess turn up at all the best parties and are always sophisticated and erudite company with magnetic and compelling personalities. People often find it hard to refuse them anything and no one has anything bad to say about them, nor about the three young ladies who often accompany them on their travels around the region. It is assumed that they have a private chapel in their castle, because no one has ever seen them in church. 

OK, witches often have a bad reputation, but this is mostly just gossip and bad publicity. You shouldn't believe everything you might read in nasty muck-raking books like the Malleus Maleficarum, after all that Heinrich Kramer was just a misogynistic old nuisance who couldn't get a girlfriend. Anyway, these two witches are most definitely not bad people. In fact, they are conscientious and public-spirited young women  who have dedicated themselves to the business of Pest Control across the Carpathians and beyond. If your town or village has a blood-sucking problem, just get the Bürgermeister to get in touch with Mr Rupert Giles, Miss Summers' agent and business manager. The Misses Summers and Rosenberg will soon sort out your problems. Trust me, the problem will disappear like magic in a puff of smoke.

First post of 2026 - odd happenings in the old graveyard

I've had these Gothic Horror figures from Bad Squiddo on the painting table for a while. First, three young women;

 Clearly, they have decided to take an evening stroll, but why on earth have they chosen the old ruined graveyard? Haven't they heard the rumours about this place?

Next, the kind of people who usually hang around the old graveyard at night;

Who are these women? There is something clearly abnormal happening here. Why do we only ever see them at night? Why is it that few of those who see them are ever heard of again, and those who do escape end up babbling insanely about "Vampire Acolytes" preying on the innocent and foolish.

The scatter items are things I've had for ages and the backdrop is by Jon Hodgson at Handiwork games.

I've two more Vampires and a couple of other figures to photograph and I'll post them soon.

Elves! But not the Santa's Little Helpers variety

There are twelve in total, all metal Oathmark 28mm ones. Scroll down to see them all.

Above are two heavily-armoured High Elf warriors, a herald and a fearsome fighter with a two-handed sword.

Below, we have a hero with a mighty two-handed mace and an Elven King with a two-handed sword, probably one of those legendary blades forged by Elven smiths at the Dawn of Time.

Next up, another mighty Even warrior and an Elf Cleric.

Next a wise and puissant Elven Mage and his trusty companion, an Elf Ranger

Below are two female Elven warriors, a herald and heroic swordswoman.

And finally, two more Elf Rangers, ever alert to evil beings who might threaten the Elven homelands.

The scenery is all 3D printed stuff and the backdrops are, as usual, from one of my Jon Hodgson backdrop books.

Carpathian Fun and Games

Or maybe not. I've had some of these Bad Squiddo figures for ages. Scroll down to see them all.

 

These are a mixture of figures from the Bad Squiddo Fantasy range, but I decided that the six of them would make a rather nice fantasy Carpathian Vampire Hunting group. As we all know, young women make the very best vampire slayers, don't they? As you can see in the first two pictures, two of our valiant slayers are brandishing their personal Mr Pointy weapons and I'm sure the slayer with a crossbow is reaching for a long range Mr Pointy of her own.

I decided to give the group a colour palette that would tie them together and nothing much goes better than red and green.

Below is another Bad Squiddo figure that I've taken to calling Dave Dead while I've been painting him. I hope he's Grateful. OK, he is literally Death Incarnate, but whatever you do, don't ask him where his Sting is.

I'm rather pleased with all of these. Next, I'll finish off some vamps and victims.

A Bad Squiddo Sci Fi figure .......

 .... but I think she has a very Grimdark Imperial Guard officer vibe.

Definitely looks like she could be leading the charge against Chaos Heretics, marauding Orks from Outer Space or some other enemy of the fascistic Empire of Man. What do you think?

I can see that I made a mess of one of her eyes now, so some remedial brush work will be required. So it goes. She's a nice figure, though.

The last of my Bad Squiddo D&D figures

Only two, this time;

These two are pretty heavily-armoured, so I've decided that they might as well be Paladins. Of course, they could be fighters, but very well-equipped ones, so hardly likely to be Level 1.

I decided to keep the colours simple, but I do like the green/red contrast theme for lots of things. I'm not sure how one might play the bird of prey in D&D, but I'm sure it could be done. 

Once again, I used a Jon Hodgson backdrop.

I'm working on some more Fantasy figures at the moment, making progress but not very quickly. They'll get done before long, though.

Guards! Guards!

 Here are four more D&D figures from Bad Squiddo. Scroll down to see them all.

You could use these as fighters or NPCs. I think they work well as a pair of guards who might pop up somewhere in an adventure, which is why I used the same colour palette for both figures. Are they friends or foes? Perhaps you'll need to roll against your Persuasion to find out.

The next two are both much more heavily-armoured and look like the sort of guards who might cause a few problems for your explorers in a dungeon or maybe some other setting, like a forgotten temple in the wild hills perhaps;

I particularly like the figure on the left with the glaive. Her ornate armour is full of nice details. Both of them have a terrific vibe of coming from mysterious or unknown cultures.

Of course, they will fit into all sorts of Fantasy settings, not just D&D.

The Arcane Monoliths are from Fenris Games, an excellent source for lovely resin scenic items and the barely-visible backdrop is from Jon Hodgson at Handiwork Games.

I've got a couple more figures to post, but that's all for today.

A few more Dungeons and Dragons characters

These are all from Bad Squiddo, four figures in total (scroll down to see them all);

Above, from left to right are a Barbarian, a Warlock and a Fighter and below is another Fighter.

The eagle-eyed  might notice that the first Fighter has an artificial leg as well as missing an eye. She's obviously been in a lot of tough fights.

I like all of these figures but my favourite is the female Warlock, holding a skull marked VII, which must mean something. Who knows, perhaps she has a selection of different skulls for each day of the month?

Once again, I've used two of my Jon Hodgson backdrops, available from Bad Squiddo and Handiwork Games.

Some Dungeons and Dragons characters

 These are all 28mm figures from Bad Squiddo.

These three are pretty self-explanatory; a Ranger, a Rogue and a Cleric. Ideal characters for a group of intrepid dungeoneers and explorers of the trackless wastes and forests.

The backdrop is a Jon Hodgson one, as usual.

I'm rather pleased with how they have come out. As one always finds with Bad Squiddo figures, the sculpts have lots of drama and detail about them and the casting is incredibly crisp and clean, making them a joy to paint.

I've got several more Fantasy figures to post, but I'll be doing them over a number of posts.

Six female Pulp figures

These are all 28mm figures from Bad Squiddo;

Those of you who read this blog regularly will recognise that I've used the same setting as in my previous post. Well, what can I say? I already had the lightbox set up so why not take advantage of it? I did use a different Jon Hodgson backdrop, though.

These six will work for all kinds of Pulp games, including Eldritch Horror and also for VBCW. As usual, they are lovely clean casts and a joy to paint.

I've got a lot more stuff in varying degrees of completion, so it is now just a case of actually finishing them off and not giving in to starting other figures instead!

I've been quite busy painting

 And I've found time to finish things off and photograph them. Here are some fantasy things. First, a 28mm Bad Squiddo female Goblin Fighter;

I wanted her to have blazing red eyes, but at this level of close-up detail, they are absolutely incandescent with bloodlust. Still, she looks pretty good at normal size and she'll be a nice addition to my growing collection of fantasy figures.

Next up are some plastic 28mm figures, a mixture of Oathmark and Gripping Beast, representing all purpose NPCs, mule train hirelings and village toughs. First, two well-equipped hirelings for our long-running D&D campaign at the club;

These have leather armour in the form of long riding jerkins, helmets, square wooden shields and swords. I've given them names. The one in blue is Sigurd and the one in red is his cousin, Arnaulf.

They come with a motley crew of mule-train and camp guards, clearly recruited from some dull village where the height of excitement is chasing away gangs of thieving pixies.

These are all getting a run-out on Sunday, so I expect at least half of them will get killed off or chased away by a couple of bored Orcs while our heroic band of adventurers are wandering around some badly-lit tunnels.

I've been painting more Bloody Miniatures figures

As anyone who follows this blog knows, I am a huge fan of the excellent 17th century figures from Bloody Miniatures. I've been working on 28 more figures, and I'm going to do separate posts of them in groups of four figures;

I really like this little group, which is called The Witchfinder General. As you can see, it contains the aforementioned Witchfinder, his Clerk, his unfortunate victim and a dismounted trooper to stop the poor girl from running away.

These have loads of character and were a joy to paint. Although they aren't necessary for any battlefield, I'm sure that there might be plenty of scenarios where a Witchfinder might have a role. 

The background is, yet again from one of Jon Hodgson's excellent books.

I'll post the next four in a day or two.
 

Six various figures

 I finished off six more figures, you'll have to scroll down to see them all.

 First, these were from the Victrix British chariots set that someone game me. I decided to paint them as a Druid and a Gallic or British Warrior Queen. 

Next, two more officer types using the last two bodies from the Victrix Roman auxilia set. They are an Optio and a Centurio;

Not sure what I'll use them for, but the Optio could fit in with the dismounted Decurion I posted previously.

Finally a pair of figures designed to represent the same character with and without his armour.

 This pair are for our long-running D&D campaign. They represent a character who the party has just rescued from a band of Goblins. The figure on the right is him at that point. All his war gear is missing and he just has a borrowed sword and the clothes he was wearing them we liberated him.

The figure on the left is him once he has acquired a new helmet, mail shirt and shield. The armoured figure is a Gripping Beast plastic Saxon Thegn and the unarmoured one is from the Gripping Beast plastic Dark Age Warriors box. Clearly, in his captivity his beard has grown bushy and later on he will have found time to give it a nice trim.

The shield transfers in all the photos are from LBMS.

The rest of my completed figures, six in total.

Next up is a Bad Squiddo Community mini, Queen Zenobia of Palmyra. You can read about her HERE;

And finally, here is a Steampunk version of the Marvel super baddie, Doctor Octopus. He is from Ironclad Miniatures;

He is a suitable colleague for another Ironclad Miniatures bad guy, who I pained ages ago and called The Mad Inventor. I'm going to assume that this chap has been given these extra limbs by the former. The pair of them, plus their Automata should be a real handful in Steampunk, In Her Majesty's Name and Pulp games.

So, that is me finished with painting until I get back from holiday.

A few more recently completed figures

All of these figures are from Bad Squiddo. Scroll down to see them all.

First, a rather sinister-looking Jester;

I wanted him to have burning red eyes, which look a bit messy on close examination on a blown-up photo but which are fine on a 28mm figure. I'm not sure that he is very full of jolly japes and witty comments. I certainly wouldn't trust him to do a children's birthday party gig.

Next, we have Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, eldest daughter of King Alfred the Great of Wessex and ruler of Mercia from 911 until her death in 920. She was buried in the now-ruined St Oswald's Priory in Gloucester. She is accompanied by a female warrior.

Her companion's shield design isn't particularly of the period, being a late Roman one but I rather like it.

The remaining four figures are from the Bad Squiddo Community Minis range. Firstly, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Harriet Tubman;

And secondly, Julie d'Aubigny and Ching Shih.

I'm sure that most people have heard of the first two, but maybe not the second pair.
